INTERVIEW
Thanks Sarah for taking this time to answer these questions for BooksBooks&More.
1. You stated in your bio that you draw a lot of inspiration from Celtic mythology. Do you find it difficult at times to lean on that inspiration?
It can at times. Celtic mythology is complicated and different to learn compared to Greek or Roman. Especially when it comes to the names. But no matter what, it is always something that calls to me. There is a passion for it that drives me. And although it inspires me, I still aim to write something unique. In other words, I try not to rely on it too heavily.
2. What did you edit out of To Dreams Is to Die?
So many things! Technically, To Dream is to Die started out as a YA romance. But the more I visited bookstores, the more I realized how hard it was to find a story focused on the main character alone, and not their romance. Or having that romance as a support system. In order to create something different, I completely overhauled the first draft, determined to create a strong female main character who relies on her instincts more than others. Romance is on the back burner for her. She’s just trying to survive!
3. How did you select the name of your characters for this novel?
In order to come up with the names of my characters, I researched a ton of baby names. Originally, I just came up with random names and went with it. But as time went on, I decided to make each name mean something to the story. Some characters I kept the same, but with others, their names reflect their character or have ironic names.
4. What was your hardest scene to write?
I’d have to say any scene where Brenna was supposed to be flirting. Let’s be honest, the girl can’t flirt. And why can’t she flirt? Because I can’t flirt! We are both challenged in that area! I had to do a lot of side reading to understand a bit more while writing Aeria’s portions.
5. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
The most difficult part of my artistic process is getting into the right state of mind before writing. I could just start writing whenever and come up with random plots, but to come up with something really strong, I need to really zone out. Purge everything from my attention so there is only me and the keyboard. I have a playlist on Spotify meant to get me there, but sometimes my ADHD wins out.
Fun Question:
6. What the top five things on your bucket list, if you have one?
My bucket list…hmm. This is tricky. But if I had to choose my top five, they’d be:
- Explore Europe more (Return to Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales)
- Go Skydiving
- Be published by HarperCollins
- Become a spokesman for a whiskey brand
- Join a kickboxing class
A strange assortment, but hey! I’m a strange individual 😉
