The Advantages and Disadvantages of Self-Publishing

As part of the launch tour for my new book, BANDITS AND BALL GOWNS, the lovely folks at Books Books & More have asked me to share the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing. Here goes!
The Advantages
The big bonus of self-publishing is control. Suppose I want to change my release schedule. I just do it. When it comes to editing, there’s no third-party committee to tell me what I have to change. Sure, I get insights. But if I don’t agree, I don’t take it.
The same is true for promotions. If I want to do a discount, I simply set it in place. I also make a lot more money per book. A standard publishing deal gives you 15% of net. So that means the money comes in, the publishing house takes out their costs, and then they send you 15% of what’s left over.
The Disadvantages
There’s a reason why traditional publishing houses take such a bite out of sales. Many authors want to leverage expert guidance in terms of how to write, release or promote their work. The best of the best end up in publishing houses and you can leverage their genius.
And that certainly is tempting. I can’t think of any writer who wouldn’t love to hand over the business side of their life to a trusted third party. It was certainly my original dream. I tried to go the traditional publishing route and was unable to get any traction. But now that I’m a full-time independent writer, I’m glad about where I am and think it’s a good fit for me. What can I say? I’m a control freak.
So there you have it—my take on the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing. I hope you find it useful!
